TSL2591 High Dynamic Range Digital Light Sensor Module
TSL2591 High Dynamic Range Digital 1980 Light Sensor Module I2C High Range Optical Sensor Development Tool
Evaluation Tool: TSL2591
Interface Type: I2C
Description/Function: High dynamic range digital light sensor
Operating Temperature: +80 C
Operating Temperature: -30 C
Description: When the future is brightly lit, this ultra-high light range sensor will help you measure it. The TSL2591 light sensor is a digital light sensor suitable for use in a variety of lighting conditions. Compared to low-cost cadmium sulfide cells, this sensor is more efficient, allowing lux calculation and configurable to different gain/timing ranges to achieve a flight distance of 188 DULUX and a light range of up to 88,000 lux.

The good part of this sensor is that it simultaneously incorporates infrared and full-spectrum diodes! This means you can measure infrared, full-spectrum, or human visible light separately. Most sensors only allow one or the other, which doesn’t accurately represent what the human eye sees (because we can’t perceive the IR light emitted by most photodiodes). This sensor is similar to the TSL2561 but has a wider range (and the interface code is different). This sensor boasts a massive 600 million:1 dynamic range! Unlike the TSL2561, you cannot change the I2C address, so keep that in mind.
The built-in ADC can be utilized by any microcontroller, even one without analog inputs. The current consumption is extremely low, making it ideal for low-power data logging systems. It consumes 0.4 mA for active sensing and less than 5 µA in power-down mode.
Of course, we won’t leave you with just a datasheet and a “good luck!” – we’ve written a detailed tutorial on how to connect the sensor, equipped with an Arduino, and use example code to acquire readings and calculate lux.
